  • The article compares the enduring Indian TV shows KBC and Bigg Boss, highlighting their contrasting appeal: KBC promotes respect and dignity for contestants, while Bigg Boss thrives on conflict and voyeurism.
  • KBC, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, is praised for its fair gameplay and emotional connection with contestants, while Bigg Boss, hosted by Salman Khan, is critiqued for its lack of consequences and reliance on drama.
  • Both shows have evolved in their audience demographics, merging into a family viewing experience, but they serve different purposes: KBC aims to elevate viewers, while Bigg Boss engages through entertainment.
  • The author suggests that Bigg Boss needs to innovate urgently to remain relevant, proposing changes such as introducing real-life consequences, diversifying the setting, and enhancing transparency in voting processes.

Earlier in the week when I wrote apiece on KBC and Sochna Padega, a number of readers wrote in to ask me about Bigg Boss that launches in the next couple of weeks, and whether that too requires a facelift.

To my mind, both KBC and Bigg Boss are 20+ year survivors on Indian TV, but they survive for opposite reasons. One makes you respect India. The other makes you watch India fight.

That is their formula. Each, a winning one.

What makes KBC tick?

KBC ticks because it respects the contestant.

In 26 years, the Hot Seat has never humiliated anyone. Even if you go at Rs 10,000, Bachchan stands, shakes your hand, says "You played very well." In a country where exams shame you, KBC is the only classroom where failing still feels dignified.

Second, it ticks because Bachchan is not a host, he is a father figure. Big B doesn't judge. He listens. A contestant from Jharkhand says "My father sold goats to send me to school" and Bachchan tears up. That emotion is real. No script can create that. After 18 seasons, he has become what Sony calls "the show's emotional vocabulary."

Third, it ticks because the game is fair. The rules are clear. Lifelines are logical. No one can buy their way to the Hot Seat. In India, where you feel the entire system is rigged, KBC is one place that feels meritocratic. Your knowledge gets you there.

What makes Bigg Boss tick?

Bigg Boss ticks because it disrespects the contestant. And we love watching it.

Bigg Boss is the exact opposite design of KBC. It is not about merit. It is about conflict. Lock 16 flawed people, take away phone, clock, give them 40 cameras, cut food, give them alcohol and tasks where they have to steal each other's things. Conflict is guaranteed.

It ticks because of three things:

  1. Voyeurism: India is a society that judges loudly at home but is told to be sanskari outside. Bigg Boss gives you permission to watch people abuse, cry, love, betray – without guilt. It is the colony gossip, made national.

  2. Salman as Big Boss: If Bachchan is father, Salman is big brother who scolds. Weekend Ka Vaar is not quiz. It is moral policing. Salman shouts at contestants for what they did. India loves a patriarch who corrects people on live TV. That is why Salman works.
  1. No script, infinite story: KBC needs 1000 good questions every year. Hard. Bigg Boss needs nothing. Humans will create drama themselves. Cheapest content factory in India. 100 days, daily episode, good TRPs.

KBC sells aspiration. Bigg Boss sells Schadenfreude – pleasure from other's pain.

Which is the better show?

Depends on what you want TV to do.

If you want TV to elevate – KBC is better. It has actually created crorepatis from Dharavi, from Bihar, and from tribal Odisha. It has made knowledge sexy. It has had social impact – campaigns on North-East inclusion, girl education, Covid comeback. Advertisers like it – the likes of LIC, Adani, PhonePe want to be seen with it. It is safe.

If you want TV to engage – Bigg Boss is better. On pure numbers, Bigg Boss beats KBC on digital. Bigg Boss OTT, Jio Cinema live feed gets 2-3x watch time. Memes, reels, fights of Bigg Boss trend more than KBC answers. KBC is respected. Bigg Boss is watched.

Critically, KBC is a better show. Bigg Boss is a better business.

KBC costs Sony Rs 6-7 crores per episode with Bachchan fees, set, questions. Bigg Boss costs less, shoots in Lonavala in one house, runs 105 days non-stop. ROI of Bigg Boss is possibly higher.

Are audiences different?

Earlier, yes. Now, no.

In 2010, KBC audience was 35+, male, small-town, aspirational, Sony prime-time family. Bigg Boss audience was 18-30, urban, female, voyeuristic, Colors youth.

In 2026, both have merged into one audience: the WhatsApp family. Mother watches KBC at 9 pm for emotion. Same mother watches Bigg Boss at 10:30 pm for drama. Both are family viewing now.

But core difference remains: KBC audience wants to become the contestant. Bigg Boss audience wants to judge the contestant.

KBC viewer says "Main bhi kar sakta hoon." Bigg Boss viewer says "Main hota toh aisa nahi karta."

KBC has changed with Sochna Padega. Does Bigg Boss need to change?

Absolutely. And urgently.

KBC understood that answers are free now because of AI, so memory test is dead. It moved to thinking.

Bigg Boss has not understood that fights are free now because of Instagram. Every influencer fights daily on Reels. Why watch 100 days of same abuse in a house? Bigg Boss 16, 17, 18 have seen TRP erosion on TV, growth only on OTT uncensored feed.

Bigg Boss still runs on 2008 formula: Lock people, create love angle, create fight, Salman scolds. Audience is bored.

It needs a Sochna Padega moment.

Can respective broadcasters make both shows better?

For KBC to stay relevant after Sochna Padega:

  1. Don't make questions too tough. Sochna Padega should not mean MBA case study. Keep it relatable. "Sochna" should be common sense, not IIT JEE. If my aunt in Kanpur cannot play along at home, you’ve lost.

  2. Bring back district play. Start KBC District - select from 750 districts of India, one per episode. The Bharat feeling will return.

  3. Own the digital. KBC Play Along app gets 3 crore plays, but monetization is weak. Make Play Along real money with UPI. If I answer at home before contestant, give me Rs 100. Intention targeting – capture that intent.

  4. Bachchan transition plan. He is 83. Start grooming next host now - maybe Harsha Bhogle, Boman Irani, or Pankaj Tripathi – as co-host for Junior KBC. If Bachchan leaves abruptly, show dies like after the SRK season.

For Bigg Boss to reinvent:

  1. Shift from conflict to consequence. Right now fights have no consequence. You abuse, you stay. Make it like real life – introduce audience jury that gives real tasks outside house. Bigg Boss 18 winner should get not just money but a real job – like becoming head of a municipal ward for a week. Make it matter.

  2. Change the house. For 16 seasons same Lonavala house. Shift it. One season in a village with no electricity. One season in a corporate office. One season in Kashmir in winter. Environment creates new behaviour. Same house creates same fights.

  3. Kill Weekend Ka Vaar moral policing. Salman shouting is now predictable. Instead bring psychologists, comedians, former winners to judge. Or make Salman not scold but give them therapy. India 2026 wants mental health, not moral science.

  4. Transparency: KBC is trusted because it is transparent. Bigg Boss is trolled because voting is opaque. Show real votes, real reasons for elimination. Bring in blockchain voting via Jio.

  5. Sochna Padega version: Bigg Boss needs a thinking layer. Give tasks that need strategy, not just shouting. Example: Give them Rs 50 lakh house budget, ask them to run house for a month. Who saves, who wastes - real Bigg Boss is economics.

 A Final Assessment:

KBC and Bigg Boss are two mirrors India holds up. KBC shows the India we want to be: knowledgeable, dignified, crorepati. Bigg Boss shows the India we are: insecure, quarrelsome, emotional. India needs both mirrors. But mirrors need polishing every few years. KBC has polished itself with Sochna Padega – from memory to mindset. Bigg Boss is still showing the 2010 mirror. Its dust needs cleaning. If it doesn't, audience will move from Lonavala house to the bigger, more toxic Bigg Boss that is Instagram Live - where fight is 24x7 and free.

KBC changed because it respected that its viewer got smarter. Bigg Boss must change because it should respect that its viewer got smarter too.
