Some people don’t just live life – they define an era. Piyush Pandey was one of them. A man who turned words into magic, ideas into movements, and advertising into art.
He was the kind of person who walked into a room and filled it not just with his commanding presence but with energy, warmth, and an unmistakable sense of reverence that followed him everywhere. And I speak for many when I say – I too was, unabashedly, a fanboy of Piyush Pandey.
When I began my journey in advertising in the early ’90s, landing my first role at Ogilvy felt surreal. To learn and grow under the stewardship of Piyush Pandey's vision was to witness brilliance up close. For a young apprentice like myself, there couldn’t have been a greater privilege.
Unafraid to speak his mind, Piyush embodied courage and conviction like few others. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside him on pitches and client interactions, and his influence was magnetic; cutting across agency walls, client rooms, and creative hearts.
I’ll never forget one particular interaction with a large client. The idea hung in the balance, teetering on the edge of approval. It took just one conversation with Piyush – his unwavering belief and quiet conviction – for the Chairman to greenlight it on the spot. That was the kind of faith he inspired.
Then there was the time when he scripted an entire radio jingle on the spot, in front of a room full of clients, in less than ten minutes. It was iconic. Needless to say, we walked out winning the account. That was Piyush – creativity, instinct, and genius in motion.
Cricket was another of his great loves. A Ranji player in his youth, he often peppered his conversations and scripts with cricket analogies, seamlessly blending sport, life, and advertising into one philosophy: play with heart, play to win, and always play fair.
Piyush didn’t just shape the Indian advertising industry; he breathed life into it. His insights were razor-sharp, his humour infectious, and his ability to connect with people – unparalleled. He saw magic in the mundane and meaning in the everyday.
He was an architect of stories, of people, of culture. Every moment around him crackled with energy and wisdom, and I’m deeply fortunate to have witnessed and learned from those moments.
Above all, beyond the legacy, Piyush was simply one of the nicest human beings you could ever meet.
Rest in power, legend. Your words, your wit, and your warmth will echo through generations to come.
