I have always felt that there are two kinds of people in the world, most of us are like a moon, we radiate what we absorb from the world, being a reflective surface at best …and then there is the Sun, a source of light, energy and illumination. Radiating positivity and touching everyone in the orbit. Piyush is the SUN and I have had the privilege of being in his orbit a few times.
The fact that he only saw hope and positivity is something that many of us have experienced. The fact that he was generous in giving credit and sharing the limelight is well known too. He didn’t create ads, he built people, he built a way of thinking, behaving, acting… He built a culture. He stood by his people. He taught all of us to do it.
It is with a profound ache in my heart, and a sense of immeasurable loss shared by so many, that I write this. The news of Piyush Pandey’s passing has left a void that feels impossible to fill.
Piyush didn't just teach us how to craft campaigns; he taught us how to live. His life was a masterclass, and looking back, I can distill his extraordinary wisdom into invaluable lessons that will forever be my North Star
Piyush showed us that work doesn't have to be a chore. He was having so much fun doing what he loved, and that infectious joy permeated everything he touched. He taught me that passion isn't just a feeling; it's a fuel.
His sense of humour was legendary, his laughter booming and contagious. He taught us that a well-placed joke, a lighthearted moment, or a genuine chuckle can disarm, connect, and often, illuminate a truth far better than any serious pronouncement.
Piyush was a giant, yet his humility was equally immense. He not only gave credit to everyone for all achievements, he addressed everyone in the meeting by their name or he called them a partner and meant it… he had everyone rooting for the idea before the meeting ended.
His voice wasn't just loud; it was full of conviction, warmth, and authenticity. He taught us the importance of speaking our truth, of being present, and of letting your genuine self shine through, without apology.
His impact wasn't just on me, but on all of us in advertising and marketing. He didn't just lead; he nurtured, he encouraged, he believed in potential.
Just two months back on the 26th of September we were on a call and after discussing work, he shared a script written by a young copywriter not in my office and not on my brand, but simply because it was an idea that had to be shared. He was a champion of people and ideas, it didn’t matter where they came from, which department, which side of the table and which designation.
He taught us that good ideas need to be protected and nurtured and owned not just till they are sold, but beyond, not just till their execution but beyond, not just till their dissemination but beyond, till the results came in, till the idea had fulfilled its purpose of being, he wanted to know how it has done, what are the reactions of the sales, of the consumers, of the marketing division, of the peers. He owned not just the idea but the client issue.
Piyush, your booming voice may now be silent, but the echoes of your laughter, your wisdom, and your boundless spirit will resonate within all of us, forever. Thank you for the lessons, for the inspiration, and for showing us how to live a life truly well-lived.
