As an ongoing LPG shortage continues to affect parts of India, its impact is now beginning to appear directly on restaurant bills. In a move that has surprised many customers, some eateries have started adding separate “gas charges” to orders, making the cost of cooking fuel visible as a line item rather than absorbing it into menu prices.
The most recent instance comes from Hyderabad, where a customer reported being charged an additional ₹30 as a “gas charge” on a plain dosa. The bill, which has since circulated online, has drawn attention to how some restaurants are responding to rising LPG prices and supply disruptions by passing on a portion of the cost to customers.

The bill quickly drew attention online, with many questioning the rationale and fairness of the additional charge. Social media responses reflected a mix of confusion and criticism, with users asking, “Since when did gas become a separate item on the bill?” and “What next, an electricity charge for the fan?” One comment noted, “If this continues, every ingredient could become a line item.”
This is not an isolated case. A similar instance had earlier emerged in Bengaluru, where a café added a “gas crisis charge” of ₹17 to a mint lemonade bill, representing a small portion of the total amount. The inclusion of such a charge, particularly on a cold beverage, prompted questions from customers about how these costs are determined and applied.
Reactions online leaned towards humour and disbelief, with users commenting, “Lemonade banane main kaunsa gas lagta hai,” and “Nimbu garam karke daala hai kya.” Another widely shared remark asked, “Who makes lemonade on a gas stove?”

These billing changes are unfolding against the backdrop of a wider LPG supply crisis affecting multiple Indian cities. India's LPG supply has been disrupted following US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which led to a near-total blockade of the Strait of Hormuz which is a key route for global gas shipments.
While the format may be new, the underlying tension is not. Just as diners once questioned service charges on bills, the introduction of “gas crisis” surcharges are prompting a fresh debate around pricing practices in the hospitality sector.
