Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT) has appointed Aparna Sanyal as its new Director, an update she shared through a LinkedIn post. Along with this role, Sanyal will continue as Managing Trustee of IAWRT – Chapter India (International Association of Women in Radio & Television) for another year. She will also remain actively involved as the founder and chief supporter of The Red Door, a mental health initiative.
With over 25 years of experience in media and filmmaking, this marks Sanyal’s second association with PSBT. In 2021, she joined the organisation as Executive Director at Doc_Commune, a position she held for more than four years.
Since its founding, PSBT has produced over 700 independent documentaries that have been screened at more than 2,000 festivals and have won over 350 awards. As Director, Sanyal said she is excited to guide PSBT into its next phase, with a stronger focus on working closely with documentary filmmakers, new projects and emerging storytelling formats.
In her LinkedIn post, Sanyal reflected on her journey, sharing that after graduating from film school in 2002, she had dreamed of making a film for PSBT. She described it as deeply meaningful to now lead an institution that has played a major role in shaping documentary filmmaking in India.
She highlighted PSBT’s commitment to supporting diverse voices, especially women and first-time filmmakers, and encouraging new narratives and creative approaches. Sanyal also stressed the importance of partnerships and collaborations, noting existing associations with The French Institute in India and Arthshila Art Spaces, with more in progress.
She credited the continued support of Rajiv Mehrotra, Managing Trustee of PSBT, whose vision led to the organisation’s founding 25 years ago. Sanyal added that she looks forward to working with all stakeholders to create more opportunities for filmmakers and to build on PSBT’s strong legacy.
