Rohit Prasad, the Indian-origin artificial intelligence executive who played a pivotal role in the development of Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa and in steering the company’s recent generative AI initiatives, is set to depart Amazon after a 12-year tenure. He currently serves as the Senior Vice President and Head Scientist - Artificial General Intelligence at Amazon.

Amazon President and Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy confirmed that Prasad will leave the company by the end of the year.

Prasad joined Amazon in 2013, when Alexa was still in its early stages. He played a key role in scaling the voice assistant from an emerging concept into a globally adopted service, now used by hundreds of millions of customers worldwide. From 2021 to 2023 he held the role of SVP and Head Scientist – Alexa.

In recent years, Prasad led Amazon’s push into generative artificial intelligence. Over the past two years, he headed the development of Amazon Nova and the company’s Artificial Generative Intelligence (AGI) unit.

Under his leadership, Amazon built 12 foundation AI models that are currently used by tens of thousands of companies.
