Harivansh Narayan Singh, who has made a long and steady journey from Indian journalism to politics, has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha once again. President Draupadi Murmu nominated him to the Upper House. This decision is being seen as recognition not only of his parliamentary experience but also of the balanced perspective he brings to the table through his journalism.
Harivansh's previous Rajya Sabha term ended on April 9, 2026. Discussions about his future were rife after that , but the President's decision has now put an end to all speculation. His renomination is also seen as a prioritization of political stability and experience.
This will be Harivansh Narayan Singh's third term. He previously served in the Rajya Sabha from Bihar in 2014. Harivansh is considered one of the few leaders who transitioned directly from journalism to politics and has distinguished himself in both fields. He worked for a long time at Prabhat Khabar, a newspaper that played a key role in building it into a strong and credible regional media organization.
As a journalist, Harivansh focused on grassroots issues, rural India, and social concerns. His writing and editorial vision established him as an impartial and trustworthy journalist. This experience later became a source of inspiration for him.
This was also reflected in his political work. In 2018 , Harivansh was elected Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for the first time. He was re-elected to the post in 2020 .
His calm style and balanced approach in conducting the House has often been praised , especially when there was a deadlock in the House.
He has reportedly been nominated to the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi's term in office. This nomination was made under the President's authority under Article 80 of the Constitution.
As Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh has repeatedly attempted to foster dialogue between the opposition and the ruling party. His work style clearly reflects a journalistic balance and a fact-based approach, which sets him apart from other leaders.
His personal nature is also full of simplicity and ease. Despite his political ascendancy, he has not distanced himself from his roots and journalistic values. This is why he commands respect across all political parties.
Now that Harivansh Narayan Singh is returning to the Rajya Sabha, it is being seen not just as a political comeback but also as a return to a journalistic philosophy that prioritizes dialogue , balance, and responsibility. He is expected to contribute to the House with this same approach in the future.
