As high-stakes merger developments between Disney and Reliance unfold, speculation is rife about the future of their streaming platforms. Questions linger on whether the apps will merge into a single ecosystem or if JioCinema will integrate Hotstar's content. According to sources familiar with the matter, all live sports events, including the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL), will likely stream exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar once the merger is finalised.
If confirmed, this move would mark a major shift, positioning Hotstar once again as the primary destination for cricket fans.
Hotstar, Disney’s streaming platform in India, was the go-to destination for millions of cricket fans, having streamed the Indian Premier League (IPL) for years. However, in 2022, Hotstar lost the IPL digital streaming rights to Viacom18, a Reliance-backed entity, in a high-profile bidding war. Viacom18 secured the IPL’s digital rights for the 2023-2027 cycle, with JioCinema streaming matches for free during the 2023 season, garnering massive viewership. This loss marked a significant blow for Disney+ Hotstar, which saw a decline in subscribers, as IPL was one of the platform’s major attractions.
Amid this shifting landscape, Disney began exploring options to restructure its India business. In 2023, Disney sought to offload its streaming assets, including Disney+ Hotstar, as part of a strategic move to reduce operational costs and streamline its global portfolio.
Reliance Industries emerged as a key player, negotiating to acquire Disney’s India operations, including its streaming, television, and sports broadcasting businesses.
The $8.5-billion merger between Reliance Industries and Disney's India business now underway has passed key regulatory approvals, including the green light from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
The deal represents a consolidation of media power in India, with the merged entity aiming to leverage both Disney’s content library and Reliance’s digital prowess.
However, there is no clarity yet on the entertainment content strategy. It remains uncertain whether all programming, including entertainment and sports, will be available on a single platform or split between JioCinema and Hotstar.
