On December 1, 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declared a “code red” across the company, directing teams to intensively refocus on enhancing ChatGPT’s core performance.
The directive was revealed in an internal memo, instructing staff to prioritise improvements to speed, reliability, personalization, and general user experience before moving forward with other initiatives.
The move comes amid a sharp surge in competition, particularly from Google’s newly launched AI model Gemini 3. With Gemini 3 reportedly gaining traction and challenging ChatGPT’s dominance in the rapidly evolving generative-AI space, OpenAI has signalled the need for caution and consolidation.
As part of the “code red,” OpenAI is pausing or deferring several planned features and expansions. These include integration of advertising into ChatGPT, development of domain-specific AI agents for areas such as health and shopping, and a personal-assistant feature internally known as “Pulse.” Efforts on these fronts have been put on hold until core performance and stability are reinforced.
Internal reassignments and daily development calls have been instituted to accelerate progress. The effort reflects a determination within OpenAI to ensure its flagship product remains competitive and reliable in the face of mounting external pressure.
ChatGPT’s Scale — Users, Reach, and Valuation
Despite the internal scramble, ChatGPT remains one of the most widely used AI tools globally, as the platform now boasts more than 800 million weekly active users.
Its vast user base underscores ChatGPT’s deep penetration into everyday digital life — from casual use to professional tasks. Across 2025, OpenAI has reported a steady rise in demand and usage.
Meanwhile, OpenAI’s corporate value has climbed significantly. As of late 2025, the company is valued at approximately US $500 billion. However, despite this valuation and widespread adoption, the “code red” suggests that OpenAI views performance and product strength as prerequisites for continuing growth — and perhaps as critical to justifying its market valuation.
The declaration marks one of the most significant strategic shifts at OpenAI since ChatGPT’s initial launch. This signals a maturing phase in generative-AI competition. What began as a race for novelty and innovation may now be shifting toward quality, reliability, and user trust.
By shutting down distractions and focusing on fundamentals, OpenAI appears to be acknowledging that hype alone won’t guarantee continued leadership. The focus is now on execution. As the AI race heats up — especially with rivals like Gemini 3 stepping up — the stakes for OpenAI are high.
