The media fraternity has lost three senior journalists within a span of 72 hours last week, with the passing of Amit Mitra, Baquer Mirza and Prabha Jagannathan—each of whom had links to Hyderabad.
All three were in their 60s and had long careers across print and broadcast journalism.
Amit Mitra, a former journalist with BusinessLine, passed away in Visakhapatnam on December 18 at the age of 62. He began his career with The Indian Express in the mid-1980s and later joined BusinessLine ahead of its launch in 1994. During his tenure, he worked in Visakhapatnam, Mumbai and Hyderabad before opting for voluntary retirement in 2015.
Baquer Mirza, 67, passed away in Hyderabad on December 20. He began his career as a sub-editor with The Siasat Urdu daily before completing his BCJ from Osmania University in 1982–83. Mirza later joined the Indian Information Service and served with the Press Information Bureau, All India Radio and Doordarshan. He retired in 2018 as Joint Director from Assam AIR and Doordarshan.
Prabha Jagannathan died in New Delhi on December 20 after a brief illness. She had crossed 60. Jagannathan began her journalism career in 1984 with Newstime, the English daily of the Eenadu Group, in Hyderabad. She went on to work for nearly three decades in New Delhi with leading newspapers including The Telegraph and The Economic Times. Known for her professional integrity, she was also an active advocate for animal welfare, particularly the protection of street dogs.
