Meta and Google have been asked to pay $6 million for alleged negligence in designing social media platforms that "are harmful for young people", media networks have reported.
The jury in a Los Angeles court found that Meta had "intentionally built addictive social media platforms".
The 20-year-old complainant in the case has been awarded the $6 million for damages.
While both platforms have disagreed with the verdict and said they will be appealing against it, Meta issued a statement saying that "Teen mental health is profoundly complex and cannot be linked to a single app."
