ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has announced the launch of Seedream 4.0, its latest AI-driven image generation and editing tool. Developed by its Seed Department, the model is designed to take on Google DeepMind’s Nano Banana—officially known as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image—marking a new chapter in the intensifying rivalry between the two tech giants.
According to ByteDance, Seedream 4.0 demonstrated stronger performance than Gemini 2.5 Flash Image in internal benchmarks, particularly in prompt adherence, image alignment, and aesthetic quality. The tool combines the text-to-image generation features of Seedream 3.0 with the advanced editing capabilities of SeedEdit 3.0, all while retaining its pricing at $30 per 1,000 image generations, which could prove attractive for large-scale creative use.
Seedream 4.0 comes with advanced functionalities such as text-to-image creation, reference-based design, composite multi-image editing, and image sequence generation. These features are expected to benefit industries ranging from product design and storyboarding to digital art and marketing. The model also supports consistent character continuity, making it useful for applications like comic creation or IP-driven content.
The tool encourages users to craft detailed prompts, specify application scenarios, and use style references to ensure accurate outputs. This focus on precision aims to solve longstanding challenges in AI-based image editing, including text rendering and style consistency.
