Varun Mohan, CEO and co-founder of AI startup Windsurf, has joined Google DeepMind. The move is reportedly as per a $2.4-billion non-exclusive licensing and talent deal.
The deal brings Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and several key researchers to Google, where they will contribute to building next-gen AI coding systems capable of autonomously writing and optimising software. Unlike a traditional acquisition, the agreement allows Windsurf to remain an independent company while Google gains access to its core technology and brainpower.
The development comes on the heels of a collapsed $3 billion acquisition attempt by OpenAI, which was reportedly derailed due to Microsoft’s concerns over IP control and organisational direction. The failure of that deal opened the door for Google to negotiate a licensing-first approach while bringing in the startup's leadership. Windsurf will now be led by Jeff Wang as interim CEO, with Graham Moreno stepping in as company president.
This latest move aligns with a broader trend in big tech, where companies are striking strategic licensing deals to absorb top talent without triggering regulatory red flags. For Google, the addition of Mohan and his team significantly strengthens DeepMind’s capabilities in building autonomous developer tools — a crucial front in the ongoing AI arms race. For Windsurf, the deal provides capital, independence, and the flexibility to expand its licensing footprint across the industry.
