The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology is scheduled to convene on 24 November to assess India’s media regulatory framework, according to reports. The meeting will centre on proposals to broaden the Press Council of India’s (PCI) mandate to include digital creators, social media influencers, and other online content producers, aiming to tackle misinformation.

Officials from the PCI are expected to present their views on the proposed amendments, which aim to formally regulate influential digital voices for the first time. Evidence and submissions from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will also be considered.

Lawmakers are set to review compliance gaps and oversight needs amid concerns over misinformation and online creators’ accountability, reports say.
