The Centre is exploring a further reduction of the recently mandated 2–3 hour content takedown window for social media platforms to as little as one hour, according to media reports, signalling a push for faster online content removal.

The move is reportedly at a preliminary stage, with no final decision taken, adding that the proposal may or may not be implemented.

In February, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology amended the IT Rules, 2021, reducing the takedown window from 24–36 hours to 2–3 hours.
