The rivalry between OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini in India is fast becoming a trend-fuelled battle, where viral features and shifting youth preferences are driving adoption. Both platforms are competing for dominance, but the numbers tell a layered story.
Between June and August 2025, Similarweb reported that ChatGPT clocked 134.9 million monthly visits globally, far surpassing Gemini’s 23.9 million. Yet, the gap is narrower in India. While ChatGPT still commands a lion’s share of the AI chatbot market at 76.66%, according to StatCounter, Gemini has edged up to 2.62% and is growing rapidly, particularly among younger users.

India’s Growing Weight in the Global Numbers
Geography adds an important twist. Similarweb data shows that India accounts for 11.21% of ChatGPT’s traffic, making it the second-largest market after the US. However, this share declined 14.09% over the summer months, pointing to churn and shifting loyalties. Gemini's India tale, on the other hand, is more optimistic as it accounts for an astounding 27.31% of its overall traffic, and in only three months, growth has soared by +30.27%. This divergence suggests that while ChatGPT retains scale, Gemini is gaining momentum by anchoring itself in India’s fast-growing digital ecosystem.
How Viral Trends Drive the Battle
Much of this shift has been fuelled by viral trends that captured Gen Z attention. ChatGPT’s Studio Ghibli-style image generator, for instance, became a cultural phenomenon. Within weeks of launch, Open AI COO, Brad Lightcap shared on X that over 130 million users generated 700 million images worldwide, with India emerging as the fastest-growing market for this trend.
Gemini further responded with its own viral hit, the Vintage Saree trend which by mid-September had fuelled 500 million picture alterations and creations on the app and hundreds of millions more across other platforms, disclosed Logan Kilpatrick, Product Lead of Gemini AI studio in a self-authored blog.
These campaigns highlight the power of user-generated content (UGC) in shaping platform preference. While ChatGPT demonstrated scale with its Ghibli trend, Gemini struck cultural resonance with the Saree edits, tapping into India’s heritage-driven visual storytelling. This contrast reveals that in India, where digital culture is deeply influenced by social sharing, platforms that align with cultural identity can quickly gain traction.

Engagement and Market Share Dynamics
However, the data also shows a structural challenge for both players: engagement depth remains shallow. ChatGPT users spend just 1 minute 16 seconds per session, with a high bounce rate of 85.6%, reflecting quick, transactional queries. Gemini fares slightly better, with 1 minute 37 seconds per session and a 56.7% bounce rate, but it too struggles to convert visits into longer-term engagement.
As of August 2025, ChatGPT continues to dominate the Indian AI chatbot market with a 76.66% share, while Google Gemini holds 2.62%, according to StatCounter. In terms of traffic between June and August, India contributed 11.21% of ChatGPT’s global traffic, though this figure declined by 14.09% during the period, signalling churn. Gemini, on the other hand, relies heavily on India, which accounted for 27.31% of its worldwide traffic and recorded a sharp +30.27% growth in the same timeframe.
User-generated content (UGC) trends also underline the shifting dynamics. ChatGPT’s Studio Ghibli-style image generator led to over 700 million images created globally, with India identified as the fastest-growing market. Meanwhile, Gemini’s Vintage Saree trend powered more than 500 million image creations on the app, alongside hundreds of millions more across other platforms. Engagement metrics further highlight the contrast, with ChatGPT’s shorter session times and higher bounce rates versus Gemini’s relatively deeper, though still limited, engagement.

Gen Z as the Deciding Factor
What makes the battle volatile is the fluidity of Gen Z behaviour. Young users are not tied to one platform; instead, they flock to whichever tool offers the most exciting or culturally relevant trend. This volatility means today’s leader can quickly be tomorrow’s laggard. ChatGPT’s recent decline in Indian traffic (-14%) and Gemini’s concurrent surge (+30%) reflect exactly this pattern.
This thus derives a strategic conclusion that dominance of a GenAI platform in India will not just depend on its size or scale but by who wins the trend cycle and gets the loyalty of Gen Z. Gemini's quick ascent shows that even a small base may develop exponentially if it is in line with cultural and generational trends, even though ChatGPT still leads with overwhelming global usage and more than three-fourths of India's chatbot market share.
The contest now resembles a David vs. Goliath in many aspects. While Gemini has established itself as the quick-thinking competitor and captured India's cultural imagination, ChatGPT continues to be the titan with unequalled scale and firmly established domination. The underdog platforms like Claude, perplexity and others could still change the direction of generative AI in India in a market where Gen Z has the final say and trends determine allegiances.
