Veteran adman and Rediffusion Chairman Sandeep Goyal is exploring a bid for Dentsu’s advertising operations outside Japan, a sprawling business that employs over 66,000 people across 143 markets. The unit, currently on the block, comprises some of the world’s leading agency brands and represents one of the largest global portfolios available in recent memory.

When contacted by exchange4media, Goyal confirmed that he is in active discussions with investment bankers and potential strategic partners to evaluate the deal.

The business sits under the Dentsu Aegis Network (DAN) umbrella, housing agencies such as Carat, Merkle, Mcgarrybowen, Isobar, Posterscope, iProspect and Vizeum. Much of this footprint was built after Dentsu’s 2013 acquisition of the UK-headquartered Aegis Group for $5 billion, which at the time was the largest cross-border deal by a Japanese advertising company.

The non-Japan business has long faced structural challenges, caught between Tokyo’s “communication without lines” approach and the Western model of centralised, HQ-driven networks. The decision to divest is seen as an attempt by Dentsu to streamline focus back on its home market, while unlocking value from global operations.

While Accenture is also being mentioned as a possible contender, many global advertising holding companies are expected to stay away from the race, given the complexity of integrating such a vast portfolio and the operational challenges it poses.

If Goyal moves ahead, it would mark one of the most ambitious plays by an Indian advertising leader on the global stage, placing him in contention for an empire spanning continents and some of the industry’s most recognisable media and creative brands.
