“The news of Piyush’s passing feels like the silencing of a great, booming laugh that once echoed through the corridors of Indian advertising,” said Kunal Sinha, former Chief Knowledge Officer and Regional Cultural Insights Director at Ogilvy, who worked closely with Pandey for over a decade. Remembering the legend who led not from an ivory tower but from the heart of the creative floor, Sinha added, “For those of us who had the privilege of working with him at Ogilvy, he wasn’t just a leader — he was the living embodiment of warmth, wit, wisdom, and India itself.”

Kunal paints an image of Piyush not as a distant icon, but as a man whose every word and gesture carried affection. “I can still hear his unmistakable summons, ‘Oye planner! Idhar aa!’ — half command, half affection, always delivered with that signature twinkle in his eye,” he recalls. “He had a way of making you feel seen and valued, even as he challenged you to think harder, dig deeper, and find the truer, more human story.”

It was this blend of mischief and mentorship that defined Piyush Pandey. To his teams, he wasn’t just the boss — he was the storyteller-in-chief who could transform a brainstorming session into a masterclass in human emotion.

The Moustachioed Legend

“Clients hung on to his every word, not because he was selling them an idea,” Sinha remembered, “but because he was inviting them into a world — one filled with laughter, life, and insight.”

He recalled a moment in Kyoto, when Pandey, ever the cultural anchor, insisted on finding an Indian restaurant in the old town and gathering the entire Indian contingent for dinner. “He turned an ordinary evening into a celebration of shared roots and friendship,” Sinha wrote. Whether in a boardroom or halfway across the world, Piyush carried India with him — not as a brand identity, but as a way of being.

The Man Behind the Moustache — Hospitality, Humour, and Heart

From his legendary warmth at his Dadar home to his unforgettable hosting at the Ogilvy Worldwide Board meeting at the Rambagh Palace in Jaipur, Piyush’s hospitality was as generous as his creativity. “He showcased Rajasthan with the pride of a true son of the soil,” Sinha recalled. And in Cochin, before boarding houseboats, came the quintessential Piyush one-liner:

“No need to do your exercises, just enjoy the ride and the view!”

It was this effortless charm — a mix of humour, humility, and joy — that made him beloved beyond measure.

More Than Advertising — A Lesson in Humanity

To those who worked with him, Pandey’s greatest legacy wasn’t just the campaigns he created but the values he lived by. “He taught us that advertising was never just about brands or slogans; it was about people — their humour, their struggles, their dreams,” Sinha wrote. “His heart was bigger than anyone’s. His vision reshaped Indian advertising; his humanity reshaped all of us who knew him.”

The Laugh That Still Echoes

As the industry grieves the loss of its most iconic storyteller, Kunal Sinha’s words remind us that legends like Piyush Pandey never truly leave. They live on in every line that smells of mitti, every campaign that makes India feel like home, and every young creative who dares to think differently.

“The world feels smaller today,” Sinha concludes. “But somewhere, I like to think Piyush is still telling stories — about India, about life — his voice echoing through time: ‘Oye planner! Idhar aa…’”
