Rana Barua, Group CEO – India, Southeast Asia & North Asia (Japan & South Korea) at Havas, celebrates his birthday today, marking not just another personal milestone but also a moment to reflect on a leadership journey that has significantly reshaped the contours of modern advertising and marketing across Asia.

A transformational leader with over three decades of experience, Barua’s career has been defined by reinvention, scale, and a deep understanding of how creativity, media, and business strategy must converge in an increasingly complex communications ecosystem. A Wharton College alumnus, he has consistently demonstrated the rare ability to blend global strategic thinking with deep regional insight—an approach that has made him one of the most respected leaders in the industry today.

Since joining Havas India as Group CEO in 2018, Barua has overseen one of the most remarkable growth stories within the global network. Barua has demonstrated strong entrepreneurial leadership in expanding Havas Group into a significant force in the industry. Under his leadership, Havas India expanded from just three companies to 24, while its workforce grew exponentially from 200 professionals to more than 2,500 employees within six years. This transformation was not merely about scale but about building an integrated ecosystem where creative excellence, media intelligence, and data-driven thinking operate in synergy.

Recognising his leadership impact, Havas elevated Barua in 2024 to the role of Group CEO for India, Southeast Asia, and North Asia, entrusting him with oversight across ten dynamic markets including India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, South Korea, and Japan. In this expanded mandate, he now steers both the Havas Creative Network and Havas Media Network across culturally diverse and rapidly evolving economies, positioning the organisation for future-ready growth.

Before Havas, Barua built an illustrious career across some of the most influential organisations in advertising and media. He led Contract India, one of WPP’s leading creative agencies, and served as CEO of RED FM, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening the brand’s cultural and commercial resonance. Earlier leadership roles at Radio City and prominent WPP agencies including JWT, Ogilvy, and Rediffusion Y&R helped shape his reputation as a marketer who understands both brand storytelling and business performance.

His contributions have been widely recognised by the industry. In 2021, he was honoured as the Trailblazer of the Year in Indian advertising, acknowledging his forward-looking leadership during a period of industry disruption. In 2024, his commitment to inclusive and responsible leadership earned him the 1st Runner-Up recognition at the United Nations’ WEP Awards in the Leadership Commitment category—an acknowledgment that extends beyond business success to values-driven leadership. Rana Barua has also served as the immediate past President of the Ad Club.

As Rana Barua celebrates another year, colleagues and industry peers alike recognise a leader who continues to push boundaries, nurture talent, and redefine what integrated communications leadership looks like in Asia’s fast-evolving markets. His journey remains a testament to vision, resilience, and the power of transformation in shaping the future of advertising.
