A Kerala court has issued bailable warrants against Baba Ramdev, Acharya Balkrishna, and Divya Pharmacy over allegations of misleading advertisements. The Judicial First Class Magistrate II in Palakkad issued the order on January 16 after the accused failed to appear despite being summoned for a personal hearing.
The case involves advertisements by Divya Pharmacy, a subsidiary of Patanjali Ayurved, accused of violating the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. The ads allegedly made unfounded claims about curing diseases and disparaged modern medical practices, including allopathy.
This legal challenge adds to the controversies surrounding Patanjali and its founders. Over the past two years, similar cases have been filed, including one in Kozhikode, where hearings are ongoing. The issue gained prominence when the Indian Medical Association (IMA) raised concerns about Patanjali's advertising practices, leading to temporary bans and a Supreme Court directive to issue public apologies.
Although the Supreme Court closed its contempt case against Patanjali in August 2024, citing an apology from its founders, the broader legal disputes continue. The Palakkad court has now scheduled the next hearing for February 1.
