Madison Media has seen close to Rs 800 crore worth of business slip through its fingers in the past few months, with an additional approximately Rs 700 crore now under review.
The agency has lost marquee accounts such as Godrej Consumer Products, a Rs 700-crore business, which moved to EssenceMediacom around February this year; Atomberg Technologies, with an estimated account size of Rs 50 crore, which shifted to PHD India (part of Omnicom Media Group) in April; and McDonald’s India (South & West), a Rs 60 crore account, which moved to Starcom in May.
Meanwhile, two of its other key clients - Raymond, with a media account worth approximately Rs 400 crore, and Marico, whose account is valued at over Rs 350 crore - are currently in pitch.
Compounding these losses and increased market consolidation has intensified the pressure for a strategic renewal. Many industry experts believe Ajit Varghese could be the leader Madison needs to turn the tide.
With close to three decades of experience across India and global markets, Varghese brings a rare blend of creative strategy and commercial acumen to the table. An alumnus of Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, Varghese began his media journey at Madison Media, where he rose to become COO of Madison Media Infinity, a role he held for seven years. He then spent 13 years at GroupM, holding senior leadership positions including Managing Director – South Asia at Maxus, CEO – Asia Pacific at Maxus, and later Global President of Wavemaker, based out of London.
Post GroupM, Varghese transitioned to the digital-first ecosystem, serving as Chief Commercial Officer at ShareChat, before taking on the role of Head of Revenue – Entertainment & International at JioStar, the Reliance–Disney joint venture. At JioStar, he was a central force in shaping the future of TV, digital, and connected TV ecosystems, while leading branded content, monetization strategies, and immersive consumer experiences across platforms.
Interestingly, his return to Madison marks a full-circle moment. As per his LinkedIn profile, Varghese was hired as Head of Planning for Coca-Cola on behalf of Madison in 1999, and within a year was promoted to Head of Business. Following Coca-Cola’s decision to hire an India-based agency to lead its media strategy, Varghese was recruited for his reputation for C-suite collaboration and strategic leadership. He implemented large-scale changes that led to Coca-Cola tripling its media budget, segmenting India by region and language, and reducing inefficiencies, moves that earned him a seat alongside the brand’s global leadership across the U.S. and Japan. The strong relationship helped Coca-Cola work with Madison for over a decade, retaining the account from 1999 to 2006.
In 2004, he was promoted as COO of Madison Infinity, where he led the agency’s business growth at a 40% CAGR between 2003 and 2006, driving major wins like McDonald’s, Marico, Asian Paints, Cadbury, TVS, Tata Tea, Dominos, and Axis Bank.
It’s worth noting that Marico, one of Madison’s key wins during that phase, is once again up for pitch. Madison Media first bagged the Marico media mandate in 2003 and held it until 2017, when Lodestar UM took over. Madison won the business back in 2019.
Will Ajit’s return help them retain it yet again?
During his earlier tenure at Madison, Varghese built a reputation for his pitch-winning prowess and client trust.
As per his description of his time at Madison on his LinkedIn profile, he “ensured an almost 100% win ratio when pitching new business while retaining all existing accounts”.

Going by that track record, Madison’s current roster of clients and the agency’s upcoming pitches could be in for a strong comeback run under his leadership.
With several accounts currently in play, including high-stakes ones like Marico and Raymond, Varghese’s return may be exactly the boost Madison needs to steady the ship and rebuild momentum.
Industry insiders view Varghese’s appointment as both a signal and a catalyst, bringing in a turnaround specialist at a time when Madison is reassessing its future. His presence could help stabilize operations, rebuild client trust, and sharpen focus.
There’s renewed industry chatter around a potential strategic deal or stake sale, especially with Madison being one of the last major independent agencies of scale. Varghese’s return could strengthen the agency’s positioning ahead of any such move.
