Noam Shazeer, Vice President of Engineering at Google and co-lead of its Gemini artificial intelligence models, said on Wednesday that he will leave the company to join ChatGPT maker OpenAI.

Shazeer made the announcement through a post on X. “I’m excited to share that I’ll be joining OpenAI and look forward to working with the exceptional team there. It was a difficult decision to move on. I’m incredibly proud of the amazing team at Google and everything we’ve built together. It has been an honour and a pleasure to work with all of you”, the post added.

Shazeer moves on from the tech giant in less than two years after he returned to Google.

After leaving Google in 2021, the company brought Shazeer back in August 2024 along with fellow researcher Daniel De Freitas to its DeepMind AI unit as part of a partnership with startup Character.AI.
