Kunal Dasgupta, former CEO of Sony Entertainment Television, recently recounted the pivotal moment when Sony decided to acquire the production company behind Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). Reflecting on the decision, he shared the emotional and strategic upheaval that came with witnessing the show’s debut. At the time, Sony was riding high at the number one spot, confident in its programming slate. But everything changed when KBC aired its first episode. "I watched the first episode and my heart sank," he confessed, knowing instantly that the game-changing format — with its iconic catchphrase ‘Lock kiya jaye’ — would completely upend the Indian television landscape.

Dasgupta described the moment as watching a “phantom punch” land — unexpected, invisible, yet devastatingly effective. The format, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, was unlike anything else on TV at the time. Its emotional connection with viewers, tight structure, and larger-than-life presence made it clear that the game had changed overnight. Even though Sony couldn’t stop the momentum KBC was building for its rival, Dasgupta said he was "gobsmacked" and helpless at first. The network’s dominance was at risk, and he understood that staying on the sidelines wasn’t an option.

Realizing the cultural and commercial power of KBC, Sony made the bold decision to buy out the production company responsible for the show. This decision not only helped Sony regain ground in the competitive television market but also demonstrated the network’s ability to pivot quickly and invest in proven success — even if it came from outside their original lineup.

Dasgupta made the comments on a post shared by Sameer Nair, the then head of programming at StarPlus, celebrating the silver anniversary of the iconic quiz show.

“Happy Anniversary to everyone who helped create history. There were so many of us, across multiple teams, companies and countries that made this happen. Here’s to all of us ✨?? And thank you, audiences, your applause and appreciation is what matters the most,” Jain wrote.

Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is one of India’s most iconic television quiz shows, first airing in the year 2000. Modeled on the British format Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, the show challenges contestants with a series of multiple-choice questions that increase in difficulty and prize money. Hosted for most of its seasons by legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, KBC quickly became a cultural phenomenon, blending knowledge, drama, and entertainment. The show’s signature elements — like the lifelines (such as “Phone-a-Friend” and “Audience Poll”), the tense musical cues, and Bachchan’s charismatic presence — have kept viewers hooked for over two decades.

Beyond being a game show, KBC has held a unique place in India’s social fabric. It has given ordinary people from diverse backgrounds a chance to change their lives overnight, making it a symbol of hope and aspiration. The questions often span topics from general knowledge to current affairs, culture, and history, promoting learning and curiosity among audiences. Over the years, KBC has adapted to new technology and formats, including special episodes for social causes and digital integrations, ensuring it remains relevant and beloved across generations.
