  • Walt Disney is contemplating significant job cuts as part of a cost-reduction strategy, with managers asked to identify 20% in annual savings.
  • The potential savings may result from job eliminations and reductions in operating expenses amid challenges like AI adoption, poor box-office performance, and increased streaming competition.
  • CEO Josh D’Amaro aims to redirect savings towards growth areas such as film and television, technology, theme parks, and the cruise business, while targeting double-digit growth in adjusted earnings per share for the fiscal year.
  • The consideration for further cost-cutting follows previous layoffs, including hundreds of employees in September, marking the third round of job cuts in 2026.

Walt Disney is considering cutting thousands of jobs as part of a broader cost-reduction exercise, with some managers reportedly asked to identify annual savings of 20%, according to global news reports.

The proposed savings could come from a combination of job eliminations and reductions in other operating expenses.

The reported exercise comes as Disney navigates several business challenges, including the growing use of artificial intelligence, weaker box-office performance, intensifying competition from streaming platforms and a slowdown in international attendance at its theme parks.

Under CEO Josh D’Amaro, the company is reportedly looking to redirect some of the savings towards growth priorities, including film and television programming, technology initiatives, theme parks and its cruise business.

Disney has also committed to delivering double-digit growth in adjusted earnings per share in the current fiscal year.

The reported cost review follows a series of workforce reductions at Disney this year. The company laid off hundreds of employees in September, in what was described as its third round of job cuts in 2026.

D’Amaro and CFO Hugh Johnston indicated in August that the company was evaluating additional measures to reduce expenses, including potential workforce reductions.
