As Raghav Bahl, who celebrated his birthday on January 2, turns 62, the media industry takes a moment to acknowledge the legacy of a man who has shaped and reshaped the contours of Indian journalism. From founding Network18 to building The Quint, his journey has been marked by ambition, reinvention, and an unyielding pursuit of excellence.
Bahl’s story began with a calculated leap into the media world in the 1990s. After dabbling in management consulting, he launched Network18 in 1993, transforming it from a modest production house into a media conglomerate that brought channels like CNBC-TV18, CNN-IBN, and Colors to Indian audiences. These channels were not just sources of news and entertainment but became cultural touchstones during a period of rapid globalization in India.
However, the business of media is rarely smooth. By 2012, Network18 was facing significant financial pressures. To stay afloat, Bahl turned to Reliance Industries for capital, a move that ultimately led to his exit in 2014 when Reliance assumed control of the company. For Bahl, this marked the end of an era—but also the start of a new one.
In 2015, he returned to the forefront with Quintillion Media, co-founding The Quint with his wife, Ritu Kapur. Focused on a digital-first, mobile-friendly audience, the platform quickly gained traction for its sharp editorial stance and innovative storytelling. Even as The Quint navigated challenges like the dissolution of its Bloomberg partnership, it underscored Bahl’s ability to evolve with the changing media landscape.
But beyond his ventures, Bahl’s contributions to media and journalism have been widely recognized. He has been honored with accolades like the Global Leader of Tomorrow award by the World Economic Forum (1994), the Sanskriti Award for Journalism (1994), and Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year for Business Transformation (2007). His recognition as the Media Person of the Year by the All India Management Association (2011) and the Indian Telly Award for Lifetime Contribution to Indian Television (2008) reflects the impact of his work across the decades.
As he marks another birthday, Raghav Bahl remains a towering figure in Indian media—one who isn’t afraid of taking risks or embracing change. His journey, a mix of triumphs and trials, serves as a reminder of the resilience needed to thrive in an industry where nothing is ever static. And while the next chapter of his story is unwritten, one thing is certain: it will be just as compelling as the ones before it.
