Seasoned journalist Lalit Verma on Monday appointed as resident editor of Navbharat Times, Mumbai following the retirement of Resident Editor Captain Sunder Chand Thakur.
While an official announcement in this regard is still awaited, highly placed sources in the Times of India group confirmed that Verma will now lead the Mumbai edition and his appointment as Resident Editor will be formally confirmed soon.
Verma has been associated with the Times of India group for over two decades and has been steering the NBT’s Mumbai edition as Deputy RE for the last two years. Earlier, he served as the editor of Sandhya Times for almost a decade.
He is well regarded in the Hindi media circles for his understanding of the sports, civic, political and Hindi-heartland audience base.
Army veteran Captain Thakur's retirement marks the end of an era for NBT Mumbai. Known for his disciplined newsroom functioning - a nod to his 'Captain' title - and his sharp editorial leadership, he played a key role in keeping Hindi print relevant in Mumbai's competitive media market.
During his tenure, Navbharat Times consolidated its position as the leading Hindi daily in Mumbai, focusing on civic journalism, state politics and the issues of the North Indian community in the city.
