  • The complaint alleges that Perplexity copied CNN articles, videos, and images, infringing on CNN's intellectual property rights.
  • CNN seeks compensation and a court order to prevent further unauthorized use of its material, arguing that such practices undermine original journalism.
  • In response, a spokesperson for Perplexity stated that "you can't copyright facts," suggesting that their use of the content does not violate copyright laws.

CNN has filed a lawsuit against Perplexity in a New York court, alleging that the company unlawfully used its copyrighted content to “power its products”, media agencies have reported.

According to the complaint, Perplexity has copied CNN articles, videos and images to generate content that is "identical or substantially similar" to the news publisher's original work.

CNN has argued that the AI firm's practices “infringe on its intellectual property rights and undermine the economics of original journalism”.

The media house has sought compensation and a court order to prevent Perplexity from further using its copyrighted material without authorisation.

CNN has issued a statement saying Perplexity should not be allowed to profit from content created by news organisations. The company argued that the AI startup's use of its reporting violates copyright protections and threatens the incentives that support original newsgathering.

According to a Reuters report, responding to the lawsuit, Perplexity spokesperson Jesse Dwyer said, "You can't copyright facts."
