The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered an investigation into PVR INOX over allegations of unfair trade practices in charging domestic film producers a fee for digital cinema equipment, as per media reports.
The directive follows a complaint filed by the Film and Television Producers’ Guild of India, which alleged that producers, including smaller players, are still being forced to pay a virtual digital fee (VDF), even though the transition from analogue to digital projection was completed years ago.
The Guild has pointed out that Hollywood scrapped the practice nearly a decade after the transition, but Indian producers continue to bear the cost.
As per reports, in its September 30 order, the CCI has noted a prima facie violation of competition law by PVR INOX and directed its Director General to investigate the matter and submit a report within 90 days.
