Born on September 7, 1952, in Dharakhedi village of Ujjain district, Madhya Pradesh, Alok Mehta represents that legacy of Indian journalism which has always regarded truth and courage as its guiding principles. From a modest village to the nation’s capital Delhi, he charted a journey spanning over five decades, emerging not just as an editor, writer, and broadcaster, but also as a strong voice of society and a vital pillar of democracy.
His pen and voice consistently questioned those in power. Be it the fodder scam of the 1990s, the exposure of Chandraswami’s deceit, or sensational stories connected to Rashtrapati Bhavan, Alok Mehta took risks to bring the truth to light. Threats and pressures came his way, yet he never bowed down. His editorial leadership across prestigious publications like Hindustan, Navbharat Times, Outlook Hindi, Dainik Bhaskar, and Nai Duniya, along with his candid TV commentaries, took his work into millions of households.
As the first Hindi editor elected President of the Editors Guild of India, Mehta’s selection was a testament to both his credibility and the rising stature of Hindi journalism. With over 52 years of experience across print, television, and radio, he also left his mark at international institutions such as Voice of Germany and Voice of America.
His contribution was not limited to journalism alone. With more than 27 books to his credit, covering politics, society, international relations, travelogues, and lived experiences, Mehta’s writings have been appreciated by leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Honors like Padma Shri, D.Litt., Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Award, and Bhushan Samman reflect the depth of his dedication.
His journey extended far beyond India’s borders. Representing Indian journalism across the United States, Europe, Asia, and Africa, he engaged with global leaders and interviewed figures ranging from Indira Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Dr. Manmohan Singh to Barack Obama.
Above all, Alok Mehta’s identity remained rooted in giving voice to the marginalized, tribal communities, minorities, and the underprivileged. For him, journalism was never about singing praises of power, but about echoing society’s pain and aspirations.
