A new ex-gratia compensation scheme has been announced by Prasar Bharati for employees’ families in case of death on duty, effective for staff recruited from 5 October 2007 onwards, replacing the earlier policy from 1998.
The Prasar Bharati Board approved the new policy on 4 October 2025. Compensation slabs under the new policy:
- Rs 25 lakh: Death due to accident or violent acts by anti-social elements or terrorists.
- Rs 35 lakh: Death during border skirmishes, counter-terrorism or counter-insurgency operations, or extreme weather at high-altitude/difficult border posts.
- Rs 45 lakh: Death occurring during enemy action in war or such war-like engagements which are specifically notified by the competent authority, including death occurring during evacuation of Indian Nationals from a war-torn zone in a foreign country.
The CEO of Prasar Bharati is the approving authority for compensation, and a strict timeline has been established:
- The administrative unit must report the death immediately.
- The claim process must be completed within a week.
- Compensation should be disbursed within two weeks of the incident.
Employees must nominate beneficiaries; if none, compensation is shared equally per retirement rules. The policy also permits future updates by the Department of Pension & Pensioners’ Welfare.
