A US journalist named Shelly Kittleson has been kidnapped in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, media reports cited US and Iraqi authorities. The officials said that one of the suspects is linked to an Iran-backed militia.
Shelly Kittleson was abducted on Tuesday evening, said Al-Monitor, a news outlet for which she has contributed articles. However, Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson confirmed only that an American journalist had been abducted, without naming Kittleson.
She has reported extensively from the Middle East as a freelance contributor to Al-Monitor, Foreign Policy, Politico and the BBC.
Johnson said on X that the State Department had previously warned the journalist about potential threats and is now working with the FBI to secure her release as soon as possible.
Sources indicated that US officials had contacted Kittleson multiple times about security risks, including as recently as Monday night.
In a statement to the BBC, the US State Department said it could not share further details due to privacy and other considerations.
