What once was a short break has now become a place to take a break from the insanity and uncertainties. Bathrooms are now more than a simple functional area for Gen Z; they are also places of mental retreat. When the world outside feels overwhelming, they have found the latest coping trend - bathroom camping, turning restrooms into makeshift therapy rooms.

After a TikTok user from Chicago revealed how he withdraws in the restroom while feeling overwhelmed, the trend took off. The opinion was shared by many teenage users, who described toilets as the sole place where being alone is appropriate. It has traditionally served as a private haven for some people, particularly those from challenging home situations.

Psychologists advise avoiding overusing this, even though some people view it as a kind of self-care. “Psychologically, this behaviour can act as a coping mechanism: just like some people take tea or smoke breaks to manage stress, others retreat to bathrooms,” Lissun clinical psychologist Dhruv Rawat explains. He further adds, “While this can be harmless, it can become maladaptive if used to escape responsibilities such as work, meetings, or social interactions.”

The public's response, however, has been mixed. While some criticize the overuse of common restrooms, others understand the need for private space. Commenters have been frustrated by the delayed access, especially those with medical needs. The irony of glamorizing solitude in one of the least sanitary settings is another point raised by critics.

What are we actually witnessing, then? Yes, a trend. There is also a tacit acknowledgement that individuals are overburdened. Additionally, they don't believe they have any healthy or safe means to back off. Telling them to stop isn't the answer. The goal is to create a world in which people can feel good without having to camp out in a bathroom.
