The Indian government is poised to introduce a code of conduct for social media influencers with over 5 million followers. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, aims to curb obscene and vulgar content online. Proposed guidelines may require influencers to rate their content and include disclaimers, according to media reports.
The move comes after controversy involving podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, whose inappropriate remarks on India's Got Latent show drew widespread condemnation, including from the Supreme Court. While the court protected Allahbadia from arrest, it noted, "There is something that is dirty in his mind that has been vomited by way of this program."
In light of such incidents, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasised the need for stricter regulations. Addressing the Lok Sabha, he stated, "There is a need to make existing laws more stringent to curb vulgar content on social media platforms." Vaishnaw highlighted the absence of traditional editorial checks in the digital age, leading to uncontrolled and often vulgar content. He urged the Parliamentary Standing Committee to prioritize this issue and build a consensus for stronger laws.
This development coincides with concerns among content creators regarding draft legislation proposed last year. The legislation aims to regulate broadcasting services, granting the Centre authority to conduct unannounced inspections of broadcasting networks and seize equipment if violations are suspected. Critics argue that such measures could lead to censorship, stifle free speech, and significantly expand governmental control over digital media content.
As the digital landscape evolves, the Indian government faces the challenge of balancing regulation with freedom of expression, ensuring that content aligns with societal norms without infringing on individual rights.
