Major Ashok Yadav, a key figure in India’s fight against digital piracy and Head of Global Content Protection and Anti-Piracy at JioStar, passed away on Friday following a cardiac arrest in Agra. His funeral was held on Sunday, according to sources familiar with the matter.

A former army officer turned corporate anti-piracy strategist, Yadav, led some of the most aggressive and high-impact crackdowns on illegal streaming networks in India and overseas. Over the years, he built a reputation for coordinating closely with law enforcement agencies, regulators, and industry stakeholders to curb content theft across broadcast and digital platforms.

Colleagues and industry insiders described him as relentless in his pursuit of piracy networks and instrumental in shaping enforcement strategy beyond India’s borders.

One senior industry source noted, “Major Yadav didn’t just react to piracy — he anticipated it. His push for immediate enforcement action against newly discovered platforms, without repeated court interventions, fundamentally changed how the industry responds to digital theft.”

Among his notable achievements was the dismantling of the Bos IPTV network, a piracy operation estimated to be worth ₹700 crore. He also led a crackdown on platforms such as Magicwin and spearheaded multiple enforcement drives across South India, targeting illegal cable and IPTV operators.

Yadav’s work extended internationally, particularly in the Middle East. In one significant operation, Disney Star India collaborated with law enforcement agencies in the UAE to shut down a rogue IPTV provider. The raid, conducted on September 16, 2024, led to the seizure of IPTV boxes containing access to over 12,000 pirated premium channels and content from multiple rights holders.

The action followed a criminal complaint filed by Disney Star against a platform identified as primeproott.com, which was selling IPTV boxes for ₹5,750 along with subscription access priced at ₹2,300. Authorities arrested the operator during the raid. Industry experts noted that such illegal distribution models “undermine the economics of licensed broadcasting and erode the value of sports and entertainment rights.”

“His ability to align cross-border enforcement agencies was rare,” said another source. “The UAE operation is a testament to how seriously he took the global nature of piracy.”

Yadav was also credited with advocating for faster legal and operational frameworks, enabling teams to act swiftly against emerging piracy platforms without procedural delays. “He believed speed was everything in anti-piracy enforcement,” a former colleague said. “Every hour lost meant exponential losses for rights holders.”

Before transitioning into the media and entertainment sector, Yadav served in the Indian Army. His disciplined approach and strategic thinking carried over into his corporate career, where he became a central figure in protecting high-value sports and entertainment content.

His sudden demise has left a void in the industry, particularly at a time when digital piracy continues to evolve in scale and sophistication. Tributes poured in from colleagues and enforcement partners, many of whom highlighted his leadership and commitment to safeguarding intellectual property.

He is survived by his family.
