News about Facebook planning to put out ads on WhatsApp have been doing the rounds for a while now. According to new media reports, the social media platform may finally go ahead with monetising the messaging app by hosting ads on its status message feature soon.

Back in 2016, WhatsApp VP Chris Daniels confirmed in a statement that the company may go ahead with the decision. The primary mode of monetisation would be putting ads in WhatsApp statuses. Daniels also added that the feature will benefit businesses who could reach out to their potential consumers on the messaging app. As of 2019, WhatApp had a whopping 400 million users in India.

The ads will be supported on the messaging app with the help of Facebook’s advertising system. According to reports, the users’ Facebook profiles will be matched with WhatsApp using their phone numbers, and it will determine which ad will be shown on the messaging app. In other words, FB will use targeted advertising to pick potential customers.

Despite confirming the decision to monetise WhatsApp, the company revealed that it may take them years to bring it into fruition.
