Some voids are inexplicably painful. He left an indelible mark on my life journey, both as a professional and as a person.
I first met Piyush in Ogilvy Calcutta, two decades back. I was part of the team pitching for a business with ITC Limited. I still remember that evening - he walked into the conference room like a thunderbolt, straight from the Airport, around 8 p.m. And instantly, the entire energy of the room shifted. His presence lit up the space, his enthusiasm was contagious and what followed was nothing short of magical.
We worked through the night, fuelled by his passion and infectious drive. The next morning, what got presented to the Client was a sure win. He was invincible. When he spoke about the campaign, the insights, the human truth and the cultural context, everyone listened. His words were simple yet profoundly powerful. And needless to say, Ogilvy bagged the account!
Later, when I moved to Bangalore with Tanishq, we crossed paths again on the 5th floor of Golden Enclave - the management floor of the Titan Office. He was there for a meeting with the team. When he told the then Titan Industries MD, Bhaskar Bhat, “You are taking away my good people,” I was overwhelmed. Coming from someone I admired so deeply, those words meant the world to me. At a difficult crossroads in my life, that moment became a turning point, he made me believe that indeed “kuch khaas hai hum sabhi mein…” Thank you Piyush, you never knew how that incident motivated me in life.
Later when I moved to Mumbai with World Gold Council, Ogilvy was our Creative partner until a global alignment shifted the mandate elsewhere. Yet, we kept meeting - at events, awards nights and industry gatherings. Every single time, Piyush would greet me with his warm smile and a big hug - always the same kindness, always the same light.
One of my most cherished memories, was the launch of his book PANDEYMONIUM at NCPA. My dear friend Anant Rangaswami (who’s no more) invited me. That evening remains unforgettable - laughter, conversations and reminiscing the good old days. He gifted me his book with a handwritten note - a treasure I will hold on to, forever.
“Dear Madhu,
These wishes are written in a Madhushala about the life ki Pathashala that I went to. Love,
Piyush
28.11.16”
I last met him in January 2025, so glad I captured that moment, never knowing it would be our last.
Piyush, you were and will always remain an inspiration. Your body of work is one of the main reasons I fell in love with brands, storytelling and the power of communication. You taught me that the most beautiful narratives are the simplest and most human ones.
You are deeply missed, but your words, your work and your spirit will live on forever. Shine on.
Goodbye Piyush, until we meet again on the other side.
