OpenAI’s chief communications officer, Hannah Wong, will leave the company in January, according to an internal announcement made on Monday, several news agencies have reported.
In a joint statement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and CEO of applications Fidji Simo credited Wong with playing a pivotal role in shaping the company’s public narrative during a period of rapid growth.
“Hannah has played a defining role in shaping how people understand OpenAI and the work we do,” the statement said. “She has an extraordinary ability to bring clarity to complex ideas, and to do it with care and grace.”
Wong joined OpenAI in 2021. According to a LinkedIn post, Lindsey Held, OpenAI’s vice president of communications, will lead the communications team on an interim basis. Chief marketing officer Kate Rouch is spearheading the search for Wong’s successor.
