Republic TV joins NBA

The latest entrant in the news television space has become a member of NBA

In what seems to be a positive development for the broadcasting industry, Republic TV has joined NBA (News Broadcasters Association). Vikas Khanchandani, CEO, Republic TV, confirms and says, "NBA needs to be democratised with wider representation and voice from the regional news players. We are looking forward to playing an instrumental role to make it an inclusive body."

Earlier in May, NBA had issues with journalist Arnab Goswami's maiden news venture as the former had accused it of running on multiple feeds and hence requested Television audience measurement body BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council) to withhold its ratings. NBA had urged the body to refrain from aiding and abetting the malpractice. But BARC went ahead and released the ratings following which major English news channels (who are also members of the NBA) opted out of the measuring system to protect themselves from being measured in a non-level playing field.

However, after a series of discussions and complaints to BARC and TRAI, the English news broadcasters resumed their Watermark as they were sufficiently satisfied that due to TRAI's intervention, the malpractices had been discontinued. NBA had also filed a complaint with TRAI regarding the same which led TRAI to issue a mandate against MSO regarding the usage of multiple Logical Channel Numbers (LCNs). This mandate was released within two weeks by TRAI on representations made by NBA.
