Fiction shows lead the list of 2019 Top Ten across Hindi GECs

The 2019 top ten shows list is dominated by fiction shows but as compared to 2018, this year list witnessed four reality shows entering into top ten. 

The year 2019 has been a tough one for the television broadcast business with the economic slowdown and TRAI’s new tariff regime hurting both revenue and viewership.

During the year, the industry has witnessed several new formats and shows across Hindi GEC. However, the new formats have not really worked for the networks, say experts.

 As we get closer to the year end, let’s take a look at the top ten shows of 2019, as per Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India, across Hindi GECs in both the fiction and non-fiction space.  

 According to BARC, data for top Hindi GEC shows in both SD and HD for weeks 1-49 of 2019 shows that only two new shows managed to enter in the top ten list that was mostly dominated by fiction shows running across channels for years. 

 Unlike 2018, when ‘Naagin’ held the lead position, in 2019, Colors’ ‘Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi Jigar Pe Trigger’ has led the list of top ten shows with 8561 million impressions. 

 Zee TV’s primetime drama ‘Kundali Bhagya’ grabbed the second position with 6779 million impressions, whereas the show which led the 2018 chart ‘Naagin’ on Colors is now at the third position. The third season of this Colors show has registered 6679 million impressions.   

 Sony Sab’s ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ stood fourth with 6626 million impressions, while Star Plus’s longest running show ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ is at number five with 6442 million impressions. 

 The sixth spot has been taken by Sony Entertainment Television’s ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (KBC) with 6351 million impressions. On No. 7 is ZEE TV’s Kumkum Bhagya with 6304 million impressions. Sony TV has another non-fiction show in the top ten - dance reality show Super Dancer Chapter 3 is at the eighth spot with 6050 million impressions. 

 At the ninth spot is Star Plus’ new fiction show ‘Yeh Jaadu Hai Jinn Ka’, which was launched in October and has got 6031 million impressions.

 Finally, Sony TV’s ‘Superstar Singer Singing Ka Kal’ has entered the list at No. 10 with 6002 million impressions.
