A journalist is known by his last story: Deepak Chaurasia
The Editor-in-Chief of India News shares the secret to the channel's success, the programming line-up for the General Elections, some controversies and more
TRPs have been a major concern for every channel, but in this hyper-competitive scenario, India News, the channel from ITV Network, has occupied a respectable position in the television ratings under the guidance of Editor-in-Chief Deepak Chaurasia. So, what is the real strength of India News and what is the formula for its success?
In conversation with exchange4media, Chaurasia speaks about the secret to success, the programming line-up for the forthcoming General Elections and much more…
On the ‘secret’ formula
India News has been able to establish a strong foothold in the market because we concentrate on four parameters – Speed, Accuracy, Transparency and Aggression. These four parameters set us apart from the competition.
We want to show things related to people and their issues. People prefer to watch news with aggression. We should put out correct information in a format that it is relevant for the audience.
On the programming strategy for the elections
India News is coming up with a big show in two weeks. This show will be very different from the shows that are currently running on other new channels. I cannot reveal the details about the show, but the audience will surely appreciate it. We will also continue to run our flagship show, ‘Kissa Kursi Ka - PM Kaun’. We will be giving a new dimension to the election coverage through our shows.
On the journey with India News
In less than a year’s time, India News has created a space for itself among the viewers. People said that joining India News is a suicide attempt by me, but I have a very positive thinking. I see a door in every wall and this optimistic attitude has helped me in succeeding. I had met with an accident and was on rest for four and half months, but I used to work from home with the same passion and honesty.
I think that a journalist is known by his last story, and I strongly believe in competing with myself, thereby creating a new milestone every time.
On the controversy with Asaram Bapu and the Aam Aadmi Party
I clearly say that I am not against anyone and I don’t target people on my show. It is my responsibility to raise the burning issues of the nation. In the Asaram Bapu case, we took a stand on the matter and wanted to educate the society against the corrupt god-men.
We don’t have any hatred for Arvind Kejriwal and his party, but it was our job to highlight the statements of Swami Agnivesh. It is our responsibility to raise issues concerning the society.
On owners bypassing the editors
In the TV space, owners definitely do not bypass editors. We have no interference in the editorial from our owner. It is the editor’s duty to take the right decision on every news piece. However, our hit show, ‘Tonight with Deepak Chaurasia’, was Kartikeya Sharma’s idea.
On future plans of Broadcast Editors Association (BEA)
We are going to introduce a lot of new things this year. Apart from insurance for working journalists, we have also decided to launch awards for journalists.
