In a powerful symbolic protest, leading newspapers in Kashmir blacked out their front pages on Wednesday in response to the brutal terror attack that shook Pahalgam’s Baisaran valley a day earlier. The attack claimed 28 lives, mostly tourists and left many others injured.
On Tuesday afternoon, terrorists targeted a group in Baisaran, a scenic meadow near Pahalgam, one of Jammu & Kashmir’s most popular tourist destinations. In the wake of the tragedy, prominent English and Urdu dailies such as Greater Kashmir, Rising Kashmir, Kashmir Uzma, Aftab, and Tameel-e-Irshad opted for stark black front pages, abandoning traditional layouts to make a poignant statement of grief and outrage.
Greater Kashmir headlined its front page with: "Gruesome: Kashmir Gutted, Kashmiris Grieving", with a red subheadline that read: "26 Killed in Deadly Terror Attack in Pahalgam". The editorial, titled “The Massacre in the Meadow – Protect Kashmir’s Soul”, mourned the innocent lives lost and highlighted the attack’s deep blow to the region’s peace, hospitality, and cultural identity.
“This heinous act is not just an attack on human life,” the editorial noted, “but a direct assault on Kashmir’s spirit, identity, and economy. The soul of Kashmir condemns this brutality and stands in deep solidarity with the families who came seeking beauty, but found tragedy.”
The editorial also raised serious concerns about the security lapse, pointing out that the site of the attack, reachable only by foot or mule, should have been better protected. “The fact that such a heavily visited and remote tourist area was targeted indicates a grave intelligence and coordination failure,” it stated. “This is a warning that must be taken seriously.”
The papers called for a united response from the government, security forces, civil society, and citizens to combat terrorism. “The people of Kashmir have endured years of violence without losing hope. This attack should not divide us but unite us against the forces of terror,” it urged.
Concluding with a collective call to action, the editorial read: “Let us ensure that laughter returns to the meadows of Pahalgam, not gunfire. Let Kashmir once again be a symbol of peace and progress.”
This bold editorial protest stands not only as a testament to the courage of Kashmiri journalism but also as a reflection of the collective voice of Kashmiris, who yearn for peace and firmly reject violence.
In addition to regional publications, national daily Dainik Jagran also expressed solidarity by printing a black-and-white front page with the headline “Terror Attack in Kashmir, 28 Dead” in red, signaling the nationwide grief and anger over the incident
