Sanjiv Mehta, one of India’s most respected and transformative corporate leaders, turned 65 today. A milestone birthday often prompts reflection—and in Sanjiv Mehta’s case, it unveils a story rich in vision, resilience, and a deep commitment to values-led capitalism. Over the past four decades, Mehta has not only steered businesses through global transformations but has also left an indelible imprint on the Indian corporate landscape.

From Unilever to L Catterton: A Career Defined by Purpose and Performance

With an illustrious 32-year tenure at Unilever, Sanjiv Mehta's journey is the stuff of corporate legend. Rising through the ranks across continents—from the Philippines to Bangladesh, the Middle East to India—he helmed businesses as CEO or Executive Chairman for over 21 years, with responsibilities spanning 25 countries.

But perhaps his most iconic role came as the Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) from 2013 to 2023, and as President of Unilever South Asia. Under his decade-long leadership, HUL experienced an unprecedented five-fold rise in market capitalization, reaching ₹6.3 trillion (USD 76 billion). It became the fifth most valuable company in India, a feat that underscored his ability to merge market insight with operational excellence.

Mehta’s leadership was not just about numbers. It was deeply intertwined with social impact. From empowering 200,000 ‘Shakti Ammas’, rural women micro-entrepreneurs, to championing gender parity in management, Mehta exemplified what it means to lead with purpose. His vision brought sustainability to the fore—recycling more plastic than used, saving 2.6 trillion litres of water, and creating 'Suvidha Centres' in Mumbai slums offering sanitation and dignity to thousands. Two of the strategic pillars he championed—‘Winning in Many Indias’ and ‘Re-imagining HUL’—became Harvard Business School case studies, further cementing his legacy as a visionary.

Entering a New Chapter

Even as most would consider retirement at 65, Sanjiv Mehta is only recalibrating for the next challenge. In April 2024, he stepped into a new avatar—as the Executive Chairman, India of L Catterton, a global consumer-focused private equity firm backed by LVMH and the Arnault family office. He has also entered into a joint venture with L Catterton to launch a new India-focused investment vehicle.

This isn't just a professional move—it's a strategic pivot that aligns his passion for compassionate capitalism with India's thriving consumer economy. "We do hope to create a property with the right set of values and become the first choice for entrepreneurs and founders in the consumer space," Mehta remarked. His influence will now shape not only brands but also entrepreneurial ecosystems, unlocking long-term value in India’s consumption story.

A Global Voice in Governance

Beyond corporate roles, Sanjiv Mehta is a respected statesman of Indian industry. As the President of FICCI in 2021–2022, he led the creation of ‘India @100’, a comprehensive strategy for the nation’s future, developed with McKinsey and over 200 CXOs. His non-executive directorships with Danone (France), Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Air India, and as President Commissioner of Unilever Indonesia, showcase his global governance acumen and deep understanding of stakeholder capitalism.

What makes Sanjiv Mehta’s leadership timeless is his core belief: that businesses must be purpose-driven and values-led. His consistent advocacy for diversity, inclusion, climate action, and equitable growth—even when it wasn’t fashionable—has made him a role model for a new generation of leaders.

In his own words, Sanjiv Mehta has always championed a “compassionate form of capitalism”, one that is commercially astute but also socially responsive. At a time when the corporate world is reassessing its responsibilities, Mehta stands tall as a beacon of what responsible leadership truly looks like.

While this milestone marks a moment of celebration, it also signals the beginning of a new and impactful chapter. With his vast experience, nuanced worldview, and unshakable ethical compass, Sanjiv Mehta is poised to reshape the next wave of India's consumer ecosystem through innovation, capital, and mentorship.

As colleagues, peers, entrepreneurs, and admirers across the world extend their warm wishes, the sentiment is unanimous: Sanjiv Mehta is not just a business leader, but a builder of futures—quietly powerful, values-rooted, and endlessly forward-looking.
