Today, we celebrate the birthday of Sanjay Raina, a distinguished media and entertainment professional whose career spans over decades and continents. Sanjay’s journey is a testament to his unwavering dedication, innovative thinking, and ability to transform challenges into opportunities.
Sanjay’s career began in the early 1990s with Philips India Limited, where he managed brand building for personal care products. His early experiences laid the foundation for his expertise in marketing and brand strategy, skills that would later define his career in the media and entertainment industry.
In the late 1990s, Sanjay transitioned to the media sector, joining Discovery Communications India. Here, he honed his skills in marketing, brand communications, and media strategy. His work with Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and Discovery Travel and Living showcased his ability to craft compelling narratives and engage diverse audiences.
Sanjay’s career trajectory took a significant leap when he joined Hindustan Times Limited as General Manager of Marketing. His strategic initiatives led to a double-digit readership growth and the successful launch of several sub-brands. His innovative approach, such as the “Sports as a pull-out” concept, not only enhanced revenue but also solidified HT’s position as a leading newspaper in India.
In 2004, Sanjay moved to Times Global Broadcasting, where he played a pivotal role in launching Times Now, India’s premier English news channel. His leadership in marketing and brand development was instrumental in establishing Times Now as the number one English news channel in the country.
Sanjay’s international career began with Astro Television in Malaysia, where he held several senior roles, including Senior Vice President of Platform Marketing and Brand Strategy. His work in strategic planning, consumer insights, and new media initiatives like HDTV and IPTV demonstrated his forward-thinking approach and adaptability to evolving technologies.
In 2011, Sanjay took on the role of Chief Operating Officer at TEN Sports in Dubai. His leadership in P&L management, content planning, and international operations significantly expanded the network’s reach across multiple regions, including the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Europe.
Sanjay’s tenure as General Manager at FOX Networks Group further cemented his reputation as a transformative leader. He turned around a loss-making unit into a multi-million dollar profitable business, launching National Geographic Abu Dhabi and maximizing monetization through strategic local outreach.
Most recently, Sanjay has been contributing to the growth of the media and entertainment industry as a Business Development Specialist at the Abu Dhabi Film Commission and as General Manager at Erbil Media City. His efforts in attracting content producers and developing entertainment infrastructure have been pivotal in positioning these regions as hubs for media and film production.
