R S Sharma appointed TRAI chairman
Sharma will serve as TRAI chairman for a period of three years. Sharma served as the IT Secretary and will take the position occupied earlier by Rahul Khullar, who retired on May 14 this year
The government has appointed R S Sharma as the new Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for a period of three years. Sharma served as the IT Secretary, and will take the position occupied earlier by Rahul Khullar, who retired on May 14 this year.
The appointment was approved by appointments committee of the Cabinet. Sharma is an IAS officer from the 1978 Jharkhand batch is credited to have designed key digital services such as digital locker, digitize India and for the fast execution of schemes to push electronics manufacturing in the country.
He was also the director general and mission director of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and was responsible for the implementation of the project which provides a unique identification to the citizens. Prior to this he was the principal secretary of the IT department and was responsible for formulating state policies. He also worked with government of Jharkhand as a principal secretary to the departments of science and technology, drinking water and sanitation, IT, rural development and HRD.
Sharma’s educational background includes a master’s degree in mathematics from IIT, Kanpur and another master’s in computer science from the University of California.
