India’s domestic box office grossed Rs 5,723 crore in the first half of 2025, reflecting a 14 percent growth over the same period in 2024, according to Ormax Media. Notably, 17 films crossed the Rs 100 crore mark between January and June 2025, up from just 10 during H1 2024.
Ormax projects that if this trend continues, India could reach an all-time annual box-office record of approximately Rs 13,500 crore in 2025, assuming typical H2 performance
While Chhaava led the charts with Rs 693 crore, the first half of the year saw only one film cross the Rs 250 crore mark—signaling a reduced reliance on mega-blockbusters and a healthier spread of earnings across multiple mid-range performers. The trend points to a more balanced box office landscape, driven by consistent footfalls rather than one-off big-ticket events.
Tamil cinema made notable gains too, contributing to an increase in language diversity within the Rs 100 crore club: no Tamil films crossed that mark in 2024, but three did in the first half of 2025. Similarly, Hollywood’s share nearly doubled, reflecting a growing appetite for global content.
With top-10 films contributing 39 percent of total H1 revenue—down from 44 percent in H1 2024—Ormax analysts see the emergence of a healthier, more balanced box-office ecosystem
Greater mid-range film participation has moderated revenue concentration among blockbusters, helping lower the risk of box-office volatility tied to big-ticket releases.
“For producers, distributors, and distributors, the message is clear: investing in well-crafted, mid-tier films—especially regional and genre-focused ones—can yield sustainable returns without depending solely on the occasional blockbuster.”

Hindi cinema tops, Telugu runners up
Hindi cinema regained its leadership position at the Indian box office in the first half of 2025, commanding a 38 percent share—up from 33 percent last year—driven largely by the runaway success of Chhaava, which grossed Rs 693 crore. Telugu films remained a dominant force in the South, contributing nearly one-third of the total box office revenue across India.
Tamil cinema also staged an impressive comeback, delivering three Rs 100 crore-plus films in just six months—a significant turnaround from a complete absence of Rs 100 crore titles during the same period in 2024. Hollywood, too, witnessed a remarkable rise in viewership, with its box office share doubling from 6 percent to 13 percent year-on-year, powered by the success of Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2.
Meanwhile, regional cinema in Kannada and Malayalam languages continued to hold their ground with consistent performers in their home markets, underscoring the growing strength and resilience of India's diverse cinematic landscape.

Sitaare Zameen Par top grosser of June
June 2025 was another steady month at the India box office, with gross collections crossing Rs 900 crore, including projected future collections of June releases still running in theatres. Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par emerged as the top grossers of the month, touching the Rs 200 crore gross mark. Kuberaa (Tamil/ Telugu) and F1: The Movie (Hollywood) were the other major contributors to the month’s box office.
