May 2025 delivered a solid performance at the Indian box office, raking in ₹1,136 crore in gross collections, according to the latest report by Ormax Media. This makes it the second-best performing month of the year after February, buoyed by the box office strength of Raid 2 and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

Starring Ajay Devgn, Raid 2 emerged as the biggest success of the month with over ₹200 crore in gross collections and continues to draw audiences in theatres. With this feat, the film has become the second-highest-grossing Hindi release of the year, behind Chhaava.

Raid 2 has tapped into the audience’s appetite for taut thrillers and compelling performances,” said an industry analyst at Ormax Media. “Its strong hold at the box office shows that franchise films, when done right, continue to deliver big returns.”

Hollywood also had a strong month in India. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning grossed over ₹115 crore, while Final Destination: Bloodlines and Thunderbolts rounded out the international presence in the top 10. Collectively, Hollywood films contributed ₹262 crore in May — the highest since the July 2023 Barbie-Oppenheimer combo.

“Hollywood’s ₹262 crore haul is significant,” said a spokesperson from Ormax. “This is the strongest month for English-language content in India in nearly two years. It suggests growing comfort among Indian audiences with big-budget global franchises.”

The cumulative box office revenue from January to May 2025 now stands at ₹4,812 crore, marking a 27% increase over the same period last year. The year’s top 10 grossers so far span across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema — a testament to the increasingly pan-India taste of moviegoers.

“With multiple regional blockbusters and consistent interest in dubbed and multilingual releases, the Indian box office in 2025 is not just recovering — it’s expanding,” the report noted.

As the industry eyes the June slate, which includes high-stakes releases across languages, all signs point to a continued upward trend at the multiplexes.
