Cricket great Virat Kohli has announcement retirement from test cricket.
Despite the BCCI’s request, Kohli closed the Test chapter with 123 matches, 9230 runs, and 30 centuries. After a 14-year journey in whites, the 35-year-old took to social media to announce his decision, calling it a moment of personal reflection and gratitude. Kohli’s announcement came a week after Rohit Sharma retired from Tests
His leadership saw India win 40 out of 68 Tests under his captaincy, making him the most successful Indian captain in the red-ball format. Globally, he stands fourth in the list of most successful Test captains—behind Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh.
But beyond cricketing records, Kohli's off-field brand value has reshaped athlete influence in India. His ability to impact the market is unmatched, with endorsements ranging from fashion to fintech. Known to partner with brands like Puma, Myntra, Flipkart, Audi, and Star Sports, Kohli’s presence has generated high returns for marketers and platforms alike.

Just last month, he reportedly turned down a Rs 300 crore renewal offer from Puma. Instead, Kohli joined Indian sportswear startup Agilitas as an investor and co-creator. The move is seen as a push to expand his One8 brand into an independent global label, hinting at a longer-term business play beyond cricket.
Kohli's dominance in the digital space also reflects his brand strength. With 271.2 million Instagram followers, he is India’s most-followed sportsperson online. He averages one million likes and over 24 million views per Reel. His follower base is largely male and concentrated in the 25–34 age group, making him a prime face for consumer brands targeting that demographic.
His online actions can unexpectedly influence the careers of others too.
When Kohli accidentally liked an Instagram post by actress Avneet Kaur, it led to a spike of nearly two million followers for her in just days. Reports suggest her endorsement rate jumped by 30 percent, and she went on to sign at least 12 new brand deals.
As Kohli steps away from Test cricket, many in the industry are wondering what it means for the red ball format. While fans still value the traditional form, the absence of a star like Kohli could affect viewership and overall interest, especially among younger audiences.
Kohli has already exited T20Is after India’s World Cup win last year and hasn’t featured in an ODI since the Champions Trophy earlier this year. With this, his full-time cricketing presence appears to be drawing to a close.
Even in retirement, Kohli’s influence in advertising and marketing remains intact. He has not just built a sporting legacy but has also set a new benchmark for Indian athletes in the business of influence.
