Tupperware Brands, a home goods company that popularised airtight containers, has reportedly filed for bankruptcy. A news report said that the company has been struggling to revive its business for years amid a decline in popularity.

The brand is reportedly mulling court protection after breaching debt terms and has also hired legal and financial advisors.

Tupperware and its lenders had been locked in negotiations over its $700 million debt violation. Reports also mentioned that the company’s plans aren’t finalised and could change.

Business woes have been haunting Tupperware for years. Its only US factory was shut down last June and almost 150 employees were laid off. CEO Miguel Fernandez was replaced by Laurie Ann Goldman amid efforts to revive the business.

Founded in 1946 by Earl Tupper, the brand’s objective was to offer durable food-grade storage products. Tupperware’s popularity was also driven by Brownie Wise, an American salesperson, who popularised the concept of product demos and introduced a party plan system, creating entrepreneurial opportunities for women. This system went on to break all records and made Tupperware a leading homeware brand across the globe.

As the years passed, Tupperware upgraded its products to become more diverse and environmental-friendly. In 1996, the brand came to India, starting operations in Delhi. In 2020, it became the first Direct selling brand to introduce Social Selling.

The brand has also turned millions of Indian women into financially independent entrepreneurs.
