Bhaskar Das was one of the finest people in the advertising and media industry. He had the unique ability to forge genuine friendships with everyone—whether junior or senior, young or old. My association with Bhaskar spanned more than three decades, during which I interacted with him in several capacities. Initially, it was through his role at The Times of India, and later, during our close collaboration through the Ad Club, particularly during the Goafest events.
Bhaskar was a lively person who had the rare ability to bring great intellectual value to any discussion while maintaining a humorous and easy-going vibe. He could brighten a room with his infectious energy and sharp wit.
We seem to be losing too many great people from our generation, and with Bhaskar’s passing, it feels as though a unique era is fading away. This generation had something extraordinary—the ability to debate and disagree while nurturing deep personal bonds. Bhaskar exemplified this. He often represented print media, while I was on the opposite side of the table, advocating for advertising agencies. We had our fair share of discussions and debates, yet our friendship grew stronger with every interaction.
Bhaskar was also a man of impeccable taste, which shone through in everything he did. I fondly recall the carefully curated gifts from Bombay Times parties, each thoughtfully selected, reflecting his refined sensibilities. He often joked about his vibrant and unconventional sartorial choices, like his neon-green pants and shoes. When teased, his witty retort was always, “Just because you guys are old, why should I behave like an old man?” That was Bhaskar—bold, colourful, and unapologetically himself.
Truly, his passing is a tremendous loss to the industry and to me personally. My heart goes out to Shomshuklla, his pillar of strength throughout his life. Many of Bhaskar’s thoughtfully curated efforts bore her subtle yet significant touch.
Today, the heavens have undoubtedly become more colourful and cheerful with Bhaskar’s arrival. As we mourn his loss, I take solace in the thought that his journey continues. Travel well, my dear friend. Until we meet again.
