In a bid to amplify the reach of emerging creators, YouTube has officially launched its new ‘Hype’ feature in India. The tool, first tested in countries like Turkey, Taiwan, and Brazil, is designed to give a discoverability push to creators who are yet to break into the platform’s mainstream.

Announced by Google India, Hype targets creators with fewer than 500,000 subscribers—many of whom struggle to reach new audiences despite producing consistent content. With this new feature, YouTube is attempting to bridge that gap by turning audience support into algorithmic visibility.

How ‘Hype’ Works

Integrated directly below the Like button on eligible videos, Hype allows users to show appreciation by “hyping” a video. Each Hype adds points to that video, helping it climb a dedicated Top 100 Leaderboard visible under YouTube’s Explore tab. Videos that perform well on this chart are more likely to be showcased on YouTube’s homepage, giving them a shot at significantly higher exposure.

To maintain freshness and fairness, viewers can Hype only three videos per week—and only within the first seven days after a video is uploaded. Importantly, YouTube’s algorithm gives bonus weightage to videos from smaller channels, levelling the playing field against established creators.

During a four-week beta test earlier this year, Hype drew more than 5 million engagements across over 50,000 channels globally, according to YouTube’s internal data—signalling not just platform interest but genuine viewer participation.

Part of a Larger Push for Creator Growth

Hype isn’t a standalone update. It comes as part of YouTube’s broader strategy to support creators across growth, monetisation, and content development. Recent rollouts include:

Automatic dubbing: An AI tool that translates and dubs videos into other languages, helping creators reach multilingual audiences with ease.

Digital gifts in live streams: New interactive gifting options to drive fan support and engagement during real-time content.

Inspiration Tab: An AI-powered content assistant offering suggestions for titles, scripts, and content ideas—designed especially for creators looking for inspiration or facing content fatigue.

Leveling the Discovery Game

For Indian creators navigating the fiercely competitive YouTube ecosystem, Hype could prove to be a valuable signal boost. With the bonus points system rewarding creators with smaller followings, YouTube is sending a strong message: growth on the platform doesn’t need to depend solely on algorithms or ad budgets—it can be community-powered.

The feature is expected to roll out across eligible Indian accounts in phases over the coming weeks, as part of YouTube’s ongoing effort to make content discovery more democratic and inclusive.
